Bonsai Expo at The North Carolina Arboretum

The North Carolina Arboretum presents the southeast’s premier annual Bonsai Expo on Saturday, October 13 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, October 14 from noon to 4 p.m. Now in its 12th successful year, the Expo features the Arboretum’s world-class bonsai collection as well as juried exhibits by bonsai enthusiasts from a 6-state region.

Surrounded by the splendors of the autumn season, the 2-day event features:

• A special presentation by guest artist Brussel Martin, proprietor of Brussel’s Bonsai, the largest importer and grower of bonsai in the U.S.

• Free demonstrations and workshops provided by the Arboretum’s Bonsai Curator, Arthur Joura

• An extensive display of ikebana flower arrangements and free ikebana demonstrations

• A comprehensive bonsai marketplace featuring tools, books, pots and plants

• Bonsai and ikebana workshops

• A live auction of bonsai plants and related materials

• On-site dining

Arthur Joura, Bonsai Curator at The North Carolina Arboretum, has developed one of the finest public bonsai collections in the country, since the Arboretum received its first bonsai donation in 1992. The collection is housed in a Bonsai Exhibition Garden overlooking the Southern Appalachian Mountains, which is the perfect setting for this one-of-a-kind display.

Joura is especially well known for his innovative work using species not found in other traditional collections, including plants native to the Southern Appalachians. The permanent but ever changing exhibit is well known for its diverse plant species, use of native plants and interpretations of familiar regional landscapes.

The Arboretum’s Bonsai Expo is a unique opportunity to enjoy the autumn foliage and explore the amazing world of miniature plants.

The North Carolina Arboretum events and activities are free unless otherwise indicated. For more information, visit www.ncarboretum.org  or call 828-665-2492.
