Visit Transylvania County, Land of the Waterfalls

The real beauty of Transylvania is that everything —from the excitement of Sliding Rock to the tranquility of a walk in the woods— is all within easy reach.

If you’re hooked on fly-fishing, Transylvania County’s Davidson River is ranked by “Trout Unlimited” magazine as one of the top ten trout streams in America. Area streams are stocked with brook, brown and rainbow trout, from the Pisgah Fish Hatchery, the largest in the east. Take a leisurely canoe trip down the French Broad River. Enjoy a hike. Almost 500 miles of mountain trails means there is an excursion just right before you. If you prefer a faster pace, you can scale the daunting faces of the Devil’s Courthouse and Looking Glass Rock. Transylvania also offers excellent mountain biking and horseback riding opportunities. Local outfitters and forest rangers will always offer you helpful advice or even guided trips.

Over a third of the county is part of the Pisgah National Forest and Gorges State Park —home to North Carolina’s largest black bear sanctuary and the Cradle of Forestry, America’s first forestry school. Explore the forest through the interactive exhibits and activities offered at the Forest Discovery Center and the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education.

Visit and you’ll understand why Rand McNally, The Wall Street Journal and National Geographic Traveler name this area one of America’s top 10 places to live and play.
