One of this region’s greatest attributes is its natural beauty and abundance of outdoor activities. The New and Gauley Rivers offer world-class whitewater rafting, as well as pleasant float trips. The National Park Service has the gorge’s industrial heritage, although only ghost towns remain as Mother Nature reclaims her territory along the 53-mile stretch of the New Rive. Hiking, biking, camping, fishing and many other sports are enjoyed by visitors throughout the year. The world’s longest, single-arch, steel-span bridge, The New River Gorge Bridge, offers a day of excitement each October when Bridge Day closes one lane of the structure, allowing B.A.S.E. jumpers to parachute 876 feet toward the river below, vendors to sell Appalachian arts and crafts, and spectators to view unparalleled fall foliage.
