The Digest North Carolina plantation hosts garden workshops

Historic Chinqua-Penn, located in Reidville, NC, is hosting the Lutton Greenhouse Gardening Workshops. Learn helpful gardening tips from the experts including Dwight Talley, vice-president for horticulture and historic landscape, and Martha Knox, director of horticulture at the plantation.

The regular admission price to the house, which includes a house tour, also entitles visitors to participate in these open gardening workshops,Thursdays and Saturdays, 9:30 to 11 a.m., at no additional charge.

The Green Inside: House Plants, May 14 and 16, shows the personalities of African violets and other colorful indoor blooms as your tour the plants in the Penn house.

The Red Garden Year: Geraniums to Tomatoes , May 21 and 23, explores the varieties of geraniums grown for the Penns plus the 1928 vegetable garden.

Fearless Gardening, May 28 and 30, shows how anyone can grow perennials and cut flowers. Visitors will enjoy the formal garden in detail.

Each session includes 45 minutes of instruction and a 45 minute tour. Space is limited to 30 persons per session. Call Martha Knox at 336/349-4576, extension 33, and leave a message to reserve a space.

The Chinqua-Penn house and award- winning historic gardens and landscape were recently featured as one of America’s Castles on the A&E television network.
