Thanks to a partnership of federal, state and local governments and dozens of private citizens, 250 Virginia Civil War sites will be linked with a series of trailblazing signs that, by the end of 1998, will identify and interpret key military action during the war.

"More major battles of the Civil War were fought in Virginia than in any other state," said Governor Jim Gilmore. "More than five million visitors annually come to see Virginia’s Civil War sites."

All inquirers to the toll-free phone number, 1-888-CIVIL WAR, will receive a statewide Civil War Guide, a 1998 Virginia is for Lovers Travel Guide and a glossy, full-color battle map. The map, a much desired tool among Civil War enthusiasts, pinpoints key sites in several Civil War military campaigns and regions

The statewide program officially opened in early May at the Manassas National Battlefield Park in Manassas. Dedication of the program’s final region, the Shenandoah Valley, is slated for a series of openings throughout the summer in concert with local events surrounding battles fought in the valley during the war.
