The Digest A wee bit o’ Scotland comes alive in Gatlinburg

Enjoy the food, games and music of Scotland without leaving the U.S. shores, at the 17th annual Gatlinburg Scottish Festival and Games on May 15-17 in Gatlinburg, TN’s Mills Park.

Scottish activities get underway Friday with a mountain stroll, then progresses to a parade down the Parkway Friday evening, led by the Knoxville Pipes and Drums. The parade ends in the parking area of Gatlinburg’s Fun Mountain Amusement Park.

Saturday and Sunday events at Mills Park include an all day field ceildh, professional and amateur Scottish athletics, a heritage seminar, pipe band performances and highland dance competition.

Kids can start training for heavy athletics by turning a scaled down version of the caber and tossing the famous Scottish haggis. Border collie demonstrations Saturday ;and Sunday will feature the border collies of Stan Moore of Philadelphia, TN.

More than 55 clan and heritage societies offer information about various clans, Scottish history and genealogical information. The honored society for 1998 is the Scottish American Military Society, a veterans organization for people of Scottish heritage. A parade of tartans on Sunday features all clans represented at the festival marching with tartans and banners symbolic of their clan society.

Vendors will offer a variety of Scottish clothing and food including meat pies, sausage rolls, bridies and baked goods. Ted Sheldon of Hixson, TN, will set up an 18th century pewter shop and demonstrate the art of pewtering.
