| "The Reach of Song" dramatizes the story of Georgias mountain history |
This Appalachian drama is now presented at Young Harris college in Young Harris, Georgia. The story tells of changes that occurred in the Appalachian Mountains between World War I and II, especially those affecting the people. It follows the life of Bryon Herbert Reece, the tragic mountain poet and farmer who grew up in the mountains of North Georgia.
Although Reece became famous, his greatest legacy may be his poetry which so beautifully recounts the story of the mountain people, with all their challenges and beauty.
Music and dance highlight the performances. Many performers are college students from around the nation while others are local cast members.
The drama is produced by the Appalachian Educational and Historical Society and has been named the official historical drama of Georgia. Joe Satterfield is president of the nonprofit society putting on the show. The society is funded by patron benefactors, a local lodging tax and through ticket sales.
Evening performances are at 8 p.m. and run from June 23 through August 22; some matinee performances will also be offered.
