On
June 22, Kermit Hunter's exciting family drama - Horn in the West -
explodes onto the stage at the Daniel Boone Amphitheater in Boone for the
50th season. The
ageless drama tells the story of the settling of northwest North Carolina
during the American Revolution. Horn
in the West is the nation's third oldest outdoor show, according to Curtis
Smalling, general manager. "What has made the Horn successful through
the years has been the quality of Dr. Hunter's script; it's an exciting
and universal story that is appealing to a broad audience. "But
to survive for five decades, the show has needed something else besides a
good story, and that is community ownership," Smalling said.
"The Horn tells our story. We are proud of our heritage, and that
pride and desire to see it preserved are what keeps the support for the
show strong. "Individuals,
businesses and government leaders have all stepped forward through the
years to make the show survive and thrive. "Song,
dance, pyrotechnics and high drama bring the rousing story to life each
night at 8 p.m. from June 22 through August 11 (except Mondays),"
Smalling said. Tickets
to the show are priced at $12 for adults and $6 for children age 12 and
under. All tickets include admission to the Hickory Ridge Homestead
museum, which is an 18th century living history museum adjacent to the
theater. Also on site is the Daniel Boone Native Gardens. A
50-year Horn in the West alumni reunion is planned for July 26-29, as
hundreds of former cast and crew members will gather for a variety of
special activities in Boone, Smalling said. Group
rates and group dinner packages are available. Dinner on the grounds is
catered by the Dan'l Boone Inn and includes a complimentary cast character
as a guest diner with your group. The
season gets under way with an opening night celebration on Friday, June
22, when Watauga County residents are offered a special $3 admission rate.
As
a special treat, all Boone Area Chamber of Commerce members are invited to
the performance Sunday, June 24. Smalling said the Horn in the West will
provide two complimentary tickets per Chamber member. Additional tickets
may be purchased for family members at regular prices. For
